## Emerson at a glance

Emerson Automation Solutions is the largest single flow-measurement brand by installed base in oil & gas, chemicals and pharma. Three brands sit under the parent umbrella and together cover essentially every primary flow technology:

- **Micro Motion** — Coriolis mass flow and density (since 1977; the original commercial Coriolis manufacturer).
- **Rosemount** — electromagnetic, vortex and differential pressure (orifice, Annubar, integrated DP).
- **Daniel** — ultrasonic for custody transfer of liquid hydrocarbons and natural gas.

In practice this means a plant standardising on Emerson rarely needs a second flow vendor — the same DeltaV or AMS Device Manager environment configures every meter, and the corporate spec lists tend to be deep on Rosemount / Micro Motion part numbers.

## Coriolis — Micro Motion

Micro Motion is the de facto reference for Coriolis. The current ranges to know:

- **Elite CMF / CMFS** — the gold standard for custody transfer. Accuracy to **±0.05% of rate** on liquid mass; OIML R117, MID and API 5.6 approvals. CMFS is the small-line variant for 1/8" to 1.5" and is the go-to for high-value dosing and chemical injection.
- **F-Series** — same architecture in a more compact, drop-in form factor for general process duty. ±0.1% of rate.
- **ELITE Plus CMFHC** — for HF acid, custody hydrocarbon mixtures and very high pressure (up to 414 bar) duty.

Pair any of these with the **5700 transmitter** for advanced diagnostics (Known Density Verification, Smart Meter Verification, two-phase flow ID).

## Electromagnetic — Rosemount

The Rosemount magmeter family covers everything from water utility (8750W, with no batteries / no shutdown) to demanding chemical service (8707 high-signal converter, NSF wetted material options). Highlights:

- **Rosemount 8700M / 8732EM** — workhorse mag for industrial water, slurry, conductive process fluids. Accuracy ±0.25% of rate.
- **Rosemount 8750W** — water-utility specific, NSF/ANSI 61 / 372 wetted, MID / OIML R49 custody for revenue water.
- **Rosemount 8782** — for slurry and abrasive duty with PFA or polyurethane liner choices.

## Vortex — Rosemount 8800

The 8800D is the reference vortex meter for saturated and superheated steam. Reduced-bore (8800R) holds accuracy at lower flow rates where many vortex designs go non-linear. Pair with multivariable temperature/pressure compensation for mass-flow-equivalent steam metering.

## Custody-transfer ultrasonic — Daniel

The **Daniel 3410** (liquid) and **3415** (gas) ultrasonics are the dominant custody-transfer choice for crude, refined products, NGL pipelines and gas pipelines. They typically operate at **±0.15% of reading** under metrological conditions and carry full API MPMS Chapter 5.8 / AGA-9 approvals.

- **Hygienic credentials** — EHEDG, 3-A, FDA, ASME BPE wetted materials and dual-compartment housings are standard, not options.
- **Hydrogen / low-density gas leadership** — the Promass Q and Promass X have the lowest published zero-stability of any production Coriolis, which matters for hydrogen mass measurement and refuelling.
- **HistoROM device memory** — every transmitter ships with a removable HistoROM module: instant device replacement without re-parameterisation, a real plus for spare-parts logistics.

## Coriolis — Promass

The Promass family is the broadest single-vendor Coriolis range:

- **Promass F** — the workhorse. Twin-tube, balanced sensor, ±0.05% of rate liquid mass, ±0.25% of rate gas mass. The benchmark for general process Coriolis.
- **Promass Q** — quad-tube architecture, lowest zero-stability in the catalogue, the go-to for hydrogen refuelling, R744 CO₂ trading and entrained-gas hydrocarbons.
- **Promass X** — large-line custody transfer (DN150 / 6" through DN400 / 16"), API MPMS / OIML certified.
- **Promass A / I / S** — small-line, low-flow and hygienic Tri-Clamp variants.

## Electromagnetic — Promag

The Promag family is similarly deep:

## Yokogawa at a glance

Yokogawa is the dominant DCS vendor in Japan and one of the top three globally. Their flow-measurement portfolio is built around tight Centum VP integration — every transmitter speaks **FOUNDATION fieldbus** and **HART 7**, and the device descriptions integrate cleanly into the **PRM (Plant Resource Manager)** asset management environment.

If your plant runs Centum VP, ProSafe-RS or STARDOM, a Yokogawa flow stack is the path of least integration friction. Outside of that universe the meters are competitive on technical merit but the integration advantage shrinks.

## Coriolis — Rotamass

The current generation is the **Rotamass Total Insight** (Rotamass TI), and it represents the most significant Coriolis refresh from Yokogawa in a decade:

- ±0.05% of rate liquid mass, ±0.25% of rate gas mass.
- "Total Insight" diagnostic suite: device health, application health, calibration health and process health surfaced as four traffic-light KPIs.
- Optional Pressure / Temperature compensation for true gas mass flow.
- SIL 2 (single channel) / SIL 3 (redundant) certified.

The earlier **Rotamass 3 / Rotamass Nano** ranges are still widely deployed and remain supported.

## Electromagnetic — Admag

- **AXG / AXR** — the current full-bore mag families. AXG is the higher-spec line with dual-frequency excitation and class-1 accuracy (±0.2%). Standard PFA / PTFE / hard rubber / polyurethane liners.
- **AXW** — water-utility-focused, MID R49 certified.
- **ADMAG TI** — Total Insight branding rolling through the rest of the line.

The AXG dual-frequency excitation is genuinely useful in noisy slurry duty (mining tailings, pulp stock) where most magmeters need heavy DSP filtering.

## Vortex — digitalYEWFLO

The **digitalYEWFLO** vortex meter is one of the more accurate vortex designs on the market thanks to its **Spectral Signal Processing** algorithm — it rejects mechanical and process noise better than the standard Karman-vortex DSP found on competitor units. Typical accuracy ±0.75% of rate liquid, ±1% gas / steam.

Available with integrated PT100 for temperature-compensated saturated steam mass flow (multivariable variant).

## Differential pressure — EJX / EJA-E

The **EJX910A multivariable** transmitter is probably the single most-installed multivariable DP transmitter for compensated steam / gas custody allocation. ±0.04% of span on DP, integrated absolute pressure and PT100 RTD input. It pairs naturally with a Daniel / Rosemount Annubar primary element or an integrated DP flow nozzle.

## When InstruSelect promotes Yokogawa

The selector ranks Yokogawa highly when:

- The host DCS is Centum VP / ProSafe-RS — integration is trivial.
- The duty is **noisy slurry magnetic** (AXG dual-frequency).
- The duty is **multivariable DP custody allocation** — the EJX910A is the price-performance reference.
- The site is in APAC or owned by a Japanese parent — local service and spares are typically faster from Yokogawa than the European or US majors.

For pure low-line-size Coriolis (DN6, DN10) the **Endress+Hauser Promass A** and **Micro Motion CMFS** still tend to outperform on documented zero-stability; for retrofit clamp-on duty Yokogawa does not currently make a clamp-on product line.

## Krohne at a glance

Krohne is privately-held, family-owned, and the most product-distinctive of the European flow majors. Where most competitors cover every technology with a similar architecture, Krohne tends to ship a **deliberately different design** in each technology — and that design is often the reason to specify them.

Three obvious examples:

- **OPTIMASS 6400** is the only major-vendor production Coriolis with a **single straight measuring tube**. No bends, no traps, no pressure drop above an equivalent straight pipe.
- **WATERFLUX 3070** is the only widely-deployed magmeter with a **rectangular cross-section** primary — it removes nearly all upstream straight-run requirement and runs on internal batteries for up to 15 years (no mains needed at the bury point).
- **ALTOSONIC V12** is the **12-path ultrasonic** that has become the de-facto standard for LNG custody transfer and cryogenic hydrocarbon transfer.

## Coriolis — OPTIMASS

- **OPTIMASS 1400** — twin-tube workhorse, ±0.1% of rate liquid. The Krohne entry to general-process Coriolis.
- **OPTIMASS 2400** — twin-tube custody-class, ±0.05% of rate liquid, OIML R117 / MID approved.
- **OPTIMASS 6400** — **single straight tube**, advanced active-mass-compensation algorithm. The choice for hygienic CIP/SIP (no dead leg), high-viscosity duty, and any application where the bent-tube pressure drop or entrapment behaviour of conventional Coriolis is a problem.
- **OPTIMASS 7400** — single straight tube, even larger line sizes; the typical choice for LPG, NGL custody transfer.

## Electromagnetic — OPTIFLUX / WATERFLUX

- **OPTIFLUX 1000 / 2000 / 4000 / 5000** — process magmeters in increasing duty / accuracy class. OPTIFLUX 5000 is the high-accuracy ±0.15% of rate variant.
- **WATERFLUX 3070** — battery-powered water-utility revenue magmeter. Rectangular cross-section, near-zero upstream straight run, 15-year battery life, MID R49 / OIML R49.
- **WATERFLUX 3300** — mains-powered version of the same architecture for higher-frequency logging duty.

## Ultrasonic — ALTOSONIC

- **ALTOSONIC V12** — 12-path ultrasonic, the reference custody-transfer meter for LNG, cryogenic hydrocarbons and large-line liquid hydrocarbons. ±0.15% of reading uncertainty after wet calibration.
- **ALTOSONIC 5** — 5-path; the cost-effective alternative for non-custody large-line liquids.
- **OPTISONIC 3400 / 6400** — clamp-on and inline ultrasonic for general liquid duty.

The selector promotes Krohne strongly when:

- Coriolis with **zero pressure drop and no bends** is required (CIP / SIP / sterile services, viscous hydrocarbons, high-shear-sensitive media).
- Magnetic flow on a **water utility trunk main** where upstream straight run is unavailable.
- **Custody LNG, cryogenic hydrocarbon, or large-line liquid hydrocarbon** transfer — V12 is the reference.
- The site is in mainland Europe — Krohne service density in DACH, Benelux and the Nordics is unrivalled.

Siemens is the dominant industrial automation vendor in Europe and a top-three globally. Their **SITRANS** instrumentation line covers every primary flow technology, and the key reason engineers specify Siemens over Emerson or E+H is rarely the meter itself — it is the **integration density into PROFIBUS DP / PA, PROFINET and PROFIsafe**, and the certainty that a SIMATIC HMI engineer can configure the meter through Siemens TIA Portal with no third-party DD / DTM gymnastics.

## Coriolis — SITRANS FC

- **SITRANS FC430** — twin-tube Coriolis, ±0.1% of rate liquid mass, full PROFIBUS PA / PROFINET / PROFIsafe support.
- **SITRANS FC410 / FCS400** — the small-line variants for chemical injection and additive dosing.
- **SITRANS FCT030** — for cryogenic hydrocarbon / LNG transfer (in partnership / OEM with Krohne ALTOSONIC for the largest sizes).

Coriolis is the smallest part of the SITRANS portfolio — E+H and Micro Motion ship more, in more variants, with deeper accuracy classes. The reason to specify FC is the PROFIBUS / PROFINET native integration.

## Electromagnetic — SITRANS MAG

The MAG family is broader and more competitive:

- **SITRANS MAG 5000 / 6000 transmitters** with **MAG 5100W / 3100 / 1100** primary sensors.
- **MAG 8000** — battery-powered water-utility revenue meter, MID R49 / OIML R49.
- **MAG 5100W** — water-application primary with hard-rubber / EPDM liners.
- **MAG 3100** — process-duty primary with PTFE / PFA liners for chemical service.

Accuracy ±0.2 – ±0.4% of rate depending on duty class.

## Ultrasonic — SITRANS FUS / FUH / FUE / FUP

Ultrasonic is **the strongest SITRANS family** and where Siemens out-competes most majors:

- **SITRANS FUS1010 / FUH1010 IP** — clamp-on for liquid. FUH1010 IP is **rated for pipe wall temperatures from -40 °C to +230 °C**, which is unique in the clamp-on market. It is the typical InstruSelect recommendation for retrofit on insulated steam-condensate, hot-oil and cryogenic lines.
- **SITRANS FUE950 / FUE1010** — district heating / cooling custody transfer, with integrated heat / cool BTU computation.
- **SITRANS FUP1010** — portable clamp-on for survey and verification work.

## Vortex — SITRANS FX

The **FX330** vortex is competitive for saturated and superheated steam but not the technology leader; for premium steam vortex the typical alternatives are Rosemount 8800 (Emerson) and Prowirl 200 / 300 (E+H).

The selector promotes Siemens strongly when:

- The plant DCS / PLC is **Siemens PCS 7, SIMATIC S7, WinCC** — PROFIBUS / PROFINET integration is native.
- The duty is **retrofit clamp-on ultrasonic on hot or coated piping** — the FUH1010 IP is the only clamp-on rated to 230 °C in the European market.
- The duty is **district heating or cooling BTU custody** — the FUE950 family is the reference.

## ABB at a glance

ABB is the only flow vendor with a single-vendor stack across DCS (Ability System 800xA), drives, motors, switchgear, MV power and field instrumentation. For greenfield process plants that go ABB-end-to-end, specifying ABB flow meters removes most of the integration risk between control system and field device — every device speaks PROFIBUS DP / PA, FOUNDATION fieldbus, HART, Modbus and Ethernet/IP natively.

The flow portfolio has been consolidated under the **"Measurement made easy"** brand:

- **CoriolisMaster** — Coriolis mass flow.
- **ProcessMaster** — process-duty electromagnetic.
- **WaterMaster** — water-utility electromagnetic (the global volume leader).

## Electromagnetic — the heart of the ABB flow business

ABB is the global leader in installed water-utility magmeters. The **WaterMaster** family (FEW 525 / FET 200 / FET 600 transmitters with WaterMaster primaries) holds the largest installed base across Europe and the UK water industry, with MID R49 / OIML R49 custody approvals.

- **WaterMaster** — mains-powered, hard-rubber or PTFE-lined, ±0.4% of rate. The water-utility revenue standard.
- **AquaMaster 4** — battery-powered (up to 15 years) for buried-pit installations with no mains supply. Bluetooth / cellular telemetry options.
- **ProcessMaster FEP610 / FEP611 / FEH** — process-duty industrial magmeter, PTFE / PFA / PEEK liner, ±0.2% of rate (FEP611).

## Coriolis — CoriolisMaster

- **CoriolisMaster FCB / FCH** — twin-tube Coriolis covering DN1.5 (1/16") to DN150 (6"), ±0.1% of rate liquid mass. The high-capacity FCH variant covers DN200 (8").
- **CoriolisMaster FCM** — small-line low-flow variant for chemical injection and dosing.

ABB Coriolis is competitive but not the technology leader — for very high accuracy / custody-class duty Micro Motion Elite or Promass Q typically outperform.

## SwirlMaster — the unique product

The **SwirlMaster FSS** is the only widely-deployed fluidic swirl-flow meter from a tier-1 vendor. Where a vortex needs roughly Re > 20,000 to stabilise vortex shedding, SwirlMaster generates a forced helical swirl downstream of a fixed guide vane and measures the precession frequency of that swirl. The result is stable measurement on gas, steam and clean liquid from **Re ~ 10,000** down to roughly **Re ~ 5,000** — about half the lower limit of a vortex. For low-flow steam custody allocation on small-line headers this is sometimes the deciding factor.

## When InstruSelect promotes ABB

The selector ranks ABB strongly when:

- The duty is **water / wastewater revenue metering** — WaterMaster and AquaMaster are class leaders.
- The site is on **ABB Ability System 800xA** — full vertical integration.
- The duty is **low-Reynolds gas or steam** where a vortex would marginal — SwirlMaster is the differentiating choice.

For premium Coriolis or premium custody ultrasonic, ABB is rarely the first recommendation; for pure water-utility / clean-water service ABB is hard to beat on price-performance.

## Badger Meter at a glance

Badger Meter is a US-headquartered (Milwaukee, WI) flow specialist that has deliberately stayed out of the premium process-instrumentation race and instead dominates the **water utility, HVAC, irrigation and light-industrial sub-metering** segments — the volume tail of the flow market that the European majors largely ignore.

The company is the **single largest manufacturer of residential and commercial water meters in North America** and, after the 2020 acquisition of Dynasonics, is also one of the most-deployed clamp-on ultrasonic brands in North America and Australia.

## Electromagnetic — M-Series

- **M-Series M1000 / M2000 / M5000** — process-duty industrial magmeters with PTFE, hard-rubber or polyurethane liners.
- **M-Series M5000** — the higher-spec line for water and wastewater industrial duty, ±0.25% of rate.
- **M-Series M-1500 / M-1000** — utility revenue magmeters, MID R49 / OIML R49 for water billing.

These are cost-effective and reliable, but they do not match the WaterMaster (ABB) or WATERFLUX (Krohne) on advanced features like 15-year battery operation or near-zero straight-run.

## Ultrasonic — Dynasonics

This is where Badger competes seriously with the European majors:

- **Dynasonics TFX-5000 / TFX-Ultra** — transit-time clamp-on for liquids. Field-installable, pipe wall temperatures −40 °C to +250 °C with high-temp transducers. Used heavily in chilled-water, hot-water heating, and process-water retrofit work.
- **Dynasonics DTTN / DTTS** — inline transit-time for water / process liquids.
- **Dynasonics DXN** — hybrid Doppler / transit-time — picks the right algorithm based on aeration / particulates. Useful in wastewater and dirty liquids.

Brooks Instrument is a US specialist (Hatfield, PA, founded 1946) focused on a part of the flow market the European process-instrumentation majors largely don't play in: **closed-loop mass flow control of low-flow gases** for semiconductor process tools, gas chromatographs / mass spectrometers, R&D reactors, fuel cell test rigs and pharmaceutical batch dosing.

A **mass flow controller (MFC)** is a different beast from a flow meter: it contains the sensor, a proportional control valve, and a PID loop on board, and accepts a setpoint over RS-232 / RS-485 / EtherCAT / DeviceNet / analog.
